why use cbd

Why CBD?

While some of CBD’s benefits can be most clearly observed when it is able to operate in conjunction with THC in what is often called the “whole plant” effect, it is becoming more and more apparent through users’ experience and research that most of the health benefits associated with marijuana come from CBD.

There is an increasing amount of research indicating that full-spectrum hemp CBD can provide a great deal benefits. CBD oil can be used in many different application methods and has a variety of applications for natural health and wellness.

ARTHRITIS

Arthritis is defined as the inflammation of one of more of your joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain, which typically worsen with age. While there are numerous types of arthritis the most common ones are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Risk factors include family history, age, sex (women are more likely to suffer from it), previous joint injuries, and obesity because carrying excess weight puts a tremendous amount of stress on joints.

Osteoarthritis involves wear-and-tear damage to the joints’ cartilage, which can result in pain and restricted movement caused by the ends of your bones grinding together. This type of arthritis can develop at an accelerated pace by joint injuries or infection, but can also develop naturally over time.

Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by the body’s immune system attacking the lining of the synovial membrane, a tough membrane that encases all the parts of a joint. Untreated, this can eventually lead to the destruction of cartilage and bone in the joint.

Unsurprisingly, the symptoms and signs of arthritis manifest themselves in the joints.

These may include:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Decreased range of motion

CBD oil has shown promise for relief of pain and inflammation, thanks to its ability to bind to specialized receptors in the brain and immune system. The CB2 receptor in particular manages pain and inflammation in the body, and when CBD binds to it, it is believed to stimulate the natural production of cannabinoids in the body, helping manage both pain and inflammation.

Many doctors will recommend painkillers to treat the pain, discomfort and reduced mobility associated with arthritis, but these drugs may be addictive and the side effects problematic. CBD hemp oil can provide a safer, natural alternative. As with starting any new supplemental regime, however, be sure to consult your physician to ensure safe administration with your medical history and current medication routine.

Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder. It typically manifests itself as difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, and the inability to go back to sleep once awake when not sufficiently rested. Insomnia can drain not only your energy levels and mood, but also negatively affect your health, work performance and quality of life.

It’s not uncommon for some to suffer from short term (acute) insomnia resulting from stress or a traumatic event, but some people can suffer from it for months.

Insomnia symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty falling asleep at night
  • Waking up during the night
  • Waking up too early
  • Not feeling well-rested after a night's sleep
  • Daytime tiredness or sleepiness
  • Irritability, depression or anxiety
  • Difficulty paying attention, focusing on tasks or remembering
  • Increased errors or accidents

Changing your sleep habits can help prevent insomnia and promote sound sleep, but sometimes that’s not enough. Cannabidiol has anxiolytic properties, which can reduce and relieve anxiety. Taking CBD at least 1 hour before sleep ensures your body is not working to process CBD while you are trying to sleep. In turn, that reduction in anxiety can help you start sleeping soundly again and may be worth considering as a means to find relief from insomnia.

Anxiety

Experiencing anxiety is totally normal if you live a busy life. However, anxiety disorders are a different story. Anxiety disorders are defined as having intense, excessive and lasting worry and/or fear about situations you encounter daily. These can manifest themselves as repeating episodes of sudden intense anxiety, fear or terror and can even lead to panic attacks. These disorders make it difficult to function “normally” and often interfere with work and relationships.

There are many types of anxiety disorders including agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, substance-induced anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and many other unspecified anxiety disorders.

Symptoms of anxiety or anxiety disorders include:

  • Feeling nervous, restless or tense
  • Feeling a sense of impending danger, panic or doom
  • Increased heart rate
  • Hyperventilation
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • An inability to think of anything but present anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) issues
  • Difficulty controlling worry
  • The urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety

While anxiety disorders could be caused by a separate medical condition, or even be a side effect of certain medication, the most common causes are:

  • Trauma
  • Stress due to an illness
  • Stress buildup
  • Other Mental disorders
  • Having blood relatives with an anxiety disorder
  • Drugs or alcohol

If you suspect you are suffering from an anxiety disorder, the first thing you should do is go see a doctor and get diagnosed. Not all anxiety disorders are the same, nor are all treatments. If you are already taking medication for your anxiety disorder, be sure to talk to your doctor as well, as withdrawal from some anti-anxiety drugs can lead to acute anxiety as well as irritability, dizziness, nausea, and fogginess.

If you are suffering with more mild symptoms of anxiety (or if your doctor has recommended it for your diagnosed anxiety syndrome), CBD hemp oil may help you manage your anxiety. It is cannabidiol’s anxiolytic properties that can help provide relief for anxiety by way of how it interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system.

CBD interacts with the body’s CB1 receptors, and through this interaction is thought to alter the body’s signals for serotonin productions. Serotonin is one of the body’s chemicals that plays a significant role in mental health. The traditionally prescribed medication to stimulate serotonin are called selective serotonin uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), Examples of SSRIs are Prozac and Zoloft, which while they can be effective, are also often accompanied by less than desirable side effects.

Many people with anxiety and depression have had challenges with marijuana because of what some may consider THC’s negative effects on their mental state. CBD, on the other hand, can be consumed in many different ways (tincture, salve, vape, capsule, to name a few) which can allow for the ingestion of the positive CBD properties while avoiding the psychoactive effects of THC.

Side Effects

If you've ever seen an ad for a prescription drug on TV, you’ve no doubt noticed the laundry list of potential side effects - usually read at an alarmingly fast pace. It can often lead you to wonder if taking the advertised medication could even be worth it considering the extreme side effects.

While research on CBD is still in its beginning stages, one of the appeals of CBD, aside from its qualities and benefits, is that users of CBD have experienced it has virtually no side effects. That said, this does not mean that there NO potential side effects. Research done thus far in this area has illustrated that side effects you might experience from CBD or CBD hemp oil are very mild, and can include:

  • Dry Mouth - One of the unpleasant, yet minor side effects of CBD hemp oil administration is dry mouth. This is thought to be caused by the involvement of the endocannabinoid system in the inhibition of saliva secretion. If this happens to you, a simple glass of water should send you on your way!
  • Low Blood Pressure - Higher doses of CBD can sometimes lead to a slight drop in blood pressure. However, this slight drop is usually temporary and happens soon after consuming CBD. If you are already taking medication for hypotension, be sure to consult your doctor before taking CBD.
  • Drowsiness - This is a relatively rare side effect, and tends to only occur in conjunction with higher doses of CBD. For your own safety and the safety of other, be sure not to operate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery while experiencing drowsiness
  • Inhibition of Hepatic Drug Metabolism - CBD can interact with a series of pharmaceuticals, as it inhibits the activity of some liver enzymes. If one takes high doses of CBD, the cannabinoid can temporarily neutralize the activity of those enzymes, and thus alter the way drugs are metabolized inside the body. However, this is considered a very minor side effect, as consuming cannabidiol essentially has the same effect on liver enzymes as eating a grapefruit. If you are taking pharmaceutical drugs and wish to take CBD, you should discuss any potential complications regarding reduced enzyme activity with your doctor.
