On average, people spend approximately one third of their lives sleeping. Given the extraordinary amount of time spent in a state of subdued consciousness, one would assume that if we sleep that much, it’s because we need it to function in our daily lives. While some people may sleep more than the average, some sleep considerably less, and often not by choice. According to estimations, around 8 million Americans either struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep every night. While the majority of those suffer brief insomnia symptoms, short-term insomnia disorder (less than 3 months) and chronic insomnia disorder (which occurs at least three times per week for at least three months) are also more common than one might think.
Insomnia symptoms can have very negative effects on your quality of life and include:
- Inability to focus or concentrate
- Poor memory
- Mood disturbance
- Daytime sleepiness
- Low motivation or energy
- Increased errors or accidents
- High blood pressure
Interestingly, insomnia can be (and is often) triggered by other conditions or state of mind, most commonly anxiety and stress. It can also be a side effect of certain medications or supplements, such as alpha-blockers, beta-blockers, corticosteroids, SSRI antidepressants, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, cholinesterase inhibitors, H1 antagonists, glucosamine/chondroitin and statins.

Cannabidiol has anxiolytic properties, meaning that it may be able to help reduce anxiety, one of the leading causes of insomnia. There is even some evidence that CBD may help reduce brain activity, allowing you to slip into sleep more soundly.
